GKN Aerospace Chemical Leak Forces Mass Evacuations Across Orange County
On May 22, 2026, a dangerous chemical leak at the GKN Aerospace facility in Garden Grove triggered one of the largest emergency evacuations in recent Orange County history. Tens of thousands of residents were forced from their homes after a massive industrial storage tank containing methyl methacrylate (“MMA”) began overheating and venting hazardous vapors into the surrounding community.
As the situation escalated, California Governor Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency in Orange County. Officials warned that the incident posed the risk of either a catastrophic toxic chemical spill or a Boiling Liquid Expanding Vapor Explosion (“BLEVE”) — a potentially devastating industrial explosion capable of causing widespread harm.
At Schack Law Group, we are investigating claims on behalf of residents, workers, business owners, and families affected by the Garden Grove chemical spill.
If you or your family were forced to evacuate, suffered exposure symptoms, lost income, incurred relocation expenses, or experienced other damages, you may have legal rights.
What Happened at the GKN Aerospace Facility?
According to emergency officials, the crisis began on the afternoon of May 22, when hazardous materials crews responded to the GKN Aerospace facility located in the 12000 block of Western Avenue in Garden Grove.
Authorities discovered that a 22-year-old industrial storage tank containing approximately 6,000 to 7,000 gallons of methyl methacrylate had overheated and begun releasing dangerous vapors into the air.
Methyl methacrylate is a highly flammable industrial chemical commonly used in plastics manufacturing and aerospace production. Experts warned that the compound can generate its own heat and, in an uncontrolled environment, may trigger a runaway chemical reaction capable of causing fires or explosions.
Orange County Fire Authority officials later confirmed that the tank’s temperature continued rising despite emergency cooling efforts. Crews reportedly could not safely neutralize or drain the chemical because the tank’s valve system had become inoperable. Authorities later discovered a crack in the tank itself, further increasing the danger.
Emergency officials warned the public that there were two possible outcomes:
A catastrophic spill of thousands of gallons of hazardous chemicals into the surrounding area; or
A thermal runaway explosion involving nearby fuel and chemical storage tanks.
By May 26, authorities announced that the threat of a catastrophic explosion had been reduced, but officials continued to warn that fire, smaller explosions, or additional chemical releases remained possible.
More Than 44,000 Residents Forced to Evacuate
The emergency evacuation zone eventually expanded across portions of:
Garden Grove
Cypress
Stanton
Anaheim
Buena Park
Westminster
Schools closed throughout the affected area, evacuation shelters were opened, and families were forced to leave their homes with little warning.
Many residents reported scrambling to secure hotel rooms, temporary housing, transportation, medications, work equipment, and essential belongings while uncertainty continued for days.
For elderly residents, children, medically vulnerable individuals, and non-English-speaking communities, the disruption and fear caused by the incident were especially severe.
What Is Methyl Methacrylate Exposure?
Health officials warned that exposure to methyl methacrylate vapors can cause serious symptoms and health complications. Reported symptoms associated with MMA exposure include:
Respiratory irritation
Difficulty breathing
Burning eyes
Skin irritation
Headaches
Nausea
Dizziness
Coughing
Throat irritation
Because methyl methacrylate vapor is heavier than air, it can settle in low-lying areas and potentially expose nearby residents and workers to concentrated chemical fumes. In high concentrations, exposure may lead to severe respiratory distress and hospitalization.
GKN Aerospace’s Prior Safety Violations
Public reports have revealed that GKN Aerospace previously faced environmental and safety scrutiny before this incident occurred.
In 2025, the company reportedly paid more than $909,000 to resolve air quality and environmental violations identified during a prior inspection by the South Coast Air Quality Management District.
According to reports, the violations included allegations that the company:
Used chemicals beyond permitted limits;
Allowed emissions exceeding legal standards;
Failed to maintain complete records; and
Failed to obtain required permits for certain equipment or procedures.
Although the company did not admit wrongdoing, the settlement raises serious questions regarding safety oversight, hazardous material handling, and whether adequate precautions were taken to protect surrounding communities.
You May Have a Legal Claim
Industrial facilities that store dangerous chemicals have a legal duty to safely maintain equipment, comply with environmental regulations, and protect nearby residents from foreseeable harm.
When companies fail to properly maintain hazardous storage systems, ignore safety risks, violate environmental regulations, or fail to prevent dangerous releases, they may be held legally responsible for the harm caused. Potential claims arising from the Garden Grove chemical leak may include:
Personal Injury Claims
Individuals exposed to toxic vapors may be entitled to compensation for:
Medical expenses
Respiratory injuries
Chemical exposure symptoms
Future medical monitoring
Pain and suffering
Evacuation and Displacement Claims
Residents forced to evacuate may be able to recover compensation for:
Hotel costs
Temporary housing expenses
Transportation costs
Lost personal property
Food and emergency expenses
