Crews reportedly could not safely neutralize or drain the chemical because the tank’s valve system had become inoperable. Authorities later discovered a crack in the tank itself, further increasing the danger.

Emergency officials warned the public that there were two possible outcomes:

  • A catastrophic spill of thousands of gallons of hazardous chemicals into the surrounding area; or

  • A thermal runaway explosion involving nearby fuel and chemical storage tanks.

By May 26, authorities announced that the threat of a catastrophic explosion had been reduced, but officials continued to warn that fire, smaller explosions, or additional chemical releases remained possible.

More Than 44,000 Residents Forced to Evacuate

The emergency evacuation zone eventually expanded across portions of:

  • Garden Grove

  • Cypress

  • Stanton

  • Anaheim

  • Buena Park

  • Westminster

Schools closed throughout the affected area, evacuation shelters were opened, and families were forced to leave their homes with little warning.
